Global Fund –HIV Prevention among
Female Sex Workers’ Project

About GF-FSW

This is a three-year project (2021 – 2023) being implemented in Mulanje, Thyolo, Nkhotakota and Nkhatabay. It is funded by Global Fund (GF) through World Vision Malawi (WV-M) as a Principal Recipient (PR) and Christian Aid (CA) as Sub Recipient (SR). The project aims to reduce number of new HIV infections among sex workers. The project builds on gains and successes that Pakachere made in the 4 districts, during the Global Fund NFM 2 Grant (2018 to 2020).

Pakachere IHDC supports sex workers with HIV prevention service package which includes commodity (condoms and lubricants) promotion and distribution, HIV ascertainment, STI screening, GBV screening as well as HIV prevention and treatment information. The package is delivered by a cadre of well-trained Peer Educators (PEs) and Peer Navigators (PNs) through one-on-one and group peer education sessions. Where necessary the Peer Educators and Peer Navigators refer FSWs to public health facilities for services.

Clinical services are provided by Ministry of Health through District Health Offices at facilities or outreach clinics. Services offered include HIV Testing and Counselling; STI screening, PrEP screening and referral, treatment, and referral; TB screening and referral; Cervical Cancer screening and referral; GBV screening and referral. Sex Workers requiring onward clinical and non-clinical services are referred to nearest service providers and institutions such as health facilities, police, gender and social welfare offices.
